• Project Mono
  The Mono project is an effort to create an open source implementation of the Microsoft .NET Development Framework. Mono includes: a Common Language Runtime (CLR) for the Infrastructure (ECMA CLI), a compiler for the C# language (1.0 ECMA), a Visual Basic runtime, and a set of class libraries, incuding an implementation of the .NET 1.1 profile, Mono specific libraries, and third party convenience libraries bundled. The runtime can be embedded into your application. It implements both ADO.NET and ASP.NET.
  The Mono project is a initiative of Ximian, a company dedicated to Enterprise Linux, now acquired by Novell. Mono 1.0 was released on June 30th, 2004. Ximian had its genesis in the GNOME project, initiated in 1997 by Miguel de Icaza, Ximian's cofounder. Ximian and the Mono Project.
