Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative Network (ADLNet)
The US Department of Defense (DoD) and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) launched the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative in 1997.
ADL initiative is designed to accelerate large-scale development of dynamic and cost-effective learning software and to stimulate an efficient market for these products, through the development of standards and guidelines, and a common technical framework for computer and net-based learning, that will foster the creation of reusable learning content as "instructional objects." ADL gets active collaboration with the private sector and pursuing emerging network- based technologies. -

The INTEC "Virtual Book" Project
"In a nutshell, the objective of the Virtual Book Project is to devise a practical means to convert existing text-based distance learning course material into an electronic format that will allow a student to read and study such courses directly off a PC screen without the need to print it out. The course would be enhanced with multimedia features, but would essentially retain its linear structure and would resemble a pageable book on the student's screen."
