    GNU PartEd (Partition Editor) is a program for creating, destroying, resizing, checking and copying partitions, and the file systems on them. Gerenciadores de Boot (Multi-Boot / Multi-OS)

Em síntese, boot loader é o primeiro programa de software que é executado quando o computador inicia. Ele é responsável por carregar e transferir o controle ao software núcleo (kernel) do sistema operacional (como o Windows ou o Linux). O kernel, por sua vez, inicializa o resto do sistema operacional. Um gerenciador de boot é um boot loader múltiplo, permitindo que, em um computador com vários sistemas operacionais instalados, o usuário escolha qual deles iniciar.

    GNU GRUB é um Multiboot boot loader.
    A primeira geração do GRUB (0.9x), ainda a mais utilizada, é originada do GRUB - GRand Unified Bootloader, originalmente projetado e implementado por Erich Stefan Boleyn. Ela ainda recebe correções de bugs, mas sem novas funcionalidades. O atual foco de desenvolvimento é o GRUB 2, nova geração completamente reescrita, derivada do PUPA, projeto de pesquisa financiado pela IPA Japão, com o objetivo de tornar o GRUB mais simples, seguro, robusto, portável e poderoso. O código do PUPA foi incorporado ao desenvolvimento do GRUB 2 em 2002 e o GRUB versão 0.9x foi renomeado para GRUB Legacy.
    GNU GRUB segue a especificação Multiboot, é de uso fácil por usuários finais e tem recursos sofisticados para experts. Compatível como FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and GNU/Linux. Sistemas proprietários, como Windows e OS/2, são suportados via uma função "chain-loading". GNU GRUB suporta múltiplos tipos de sistema de arquivo (filesystem), descompactação automática, modo LBA, sistemas sem disco (diskless), terminais remotos e detecta toda a memória RAM instalada.
